ILLEGAL GOLF DRIVERS

ILLEGAL GOLF DRIVERS ADD DISTANCE, BREAK USGA RULES

By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut

In 2004, the USGA imposed a size limit of 460 cubic centimeters on driver heads, but size isn't the only characteristic that makes an illegal golf driver. Drivers with a spring like face that catapults the golf ball off the driver face are illegal golf drivers. The hot face design has been declared illegal.

The Nike Hot Sumo 2 was an illegal golf driver that exceeded the USGA maximum allowed characteristic time that measures how long the balls stays on the clubface at impact. The Nike driver had a CT that was too high and didn't conform to the USGA rules.

The USGA also puts a limit on the COR (coefficient of restitution) a driver can have. The cap on the amount of COR a driver can have is .830. The COR relates to the amount of spring and spin the club puts on the ball.

460 driver

Controller 460cc Driver competes and beats the most popular drivers in golf

Other drivers that have been declared illegal golf drivers are Sigma Golf Power Play and Slazenger Golf K1 Speedline drivers.

As far as clubhead size goes, Bang Golf makes illegal golf drivers with clubheads measuring from 525 to 600 cubic centimeters, far beyond the 460 USGA limit. The company says it has sold almost 60,000 ultra max head drivers.

A new driver that provides exceptional distance but isn't an illegal golf driver is the Controller 460cc driver from www.scientificgolfclubs.com. This is the driver that meets the USGA regulation on clubhead size but coats the clubhead with a metal once used on military missiles that's twice as hard as steel and 70 percent harder than titanium. The coating adds distance to the max head driver, with a long ball champ saying it's the best of more than 500 drivers he's used in the past 20 years.

The USGA hasn't made the Controller 460cc illegal yet, but new regulations could follow when the USGA sees the distance this driver is getting. It's breaking records for average golfers who are getting at least 20 additional yards per drive and hitting longer drives than they do with their high priced drivers.
