TACONIC GOLF CLUB
GREAT BERKSHIRES GOLF ON ONE OF THE BEST COLLEGE COURSES AT THE
TACONIC GOLF CLUB
By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
The Taconic Golf Club at Williams College in Williamstown, MA is considered to be one of the best college courses in the country. The 6,640 par 71 course is tucked into the Berkshire Mountains on 109 acres of rolling terrain. The course isn't long and the challenge comes from reaching greens that are located atop knolls or hillocks.
The greens are often fast, with significant slope from back to front, so it's best to remain short of the hole so you can putt uphill. Many tee shots are elevated with second shots playing uphill.

With all the trouble on the greens at the Taconic Golf Club, you'd best have an accurate putter. www.scientificgolfclubs.com, the site that specializes in scientifically designed clubs, offers the Closer Weighted Putter that can be customized to your stroke and the speed of the greens. It features three moveable weights and nine placement holes that can be used to control pushes and pulls. And you can remove the weights to lighten the putter, which is perfect for fast greens. The Closer also features a red and white sighting line for straight to the pin set ups.
The best holes at Taconic Golf Club include the 3rd, a 421 yard par 4 with a bunker on the left. Carry it off the tee to reach a level lie and short shot to the green. The 4th is a 360 yard par 4 with a creek down the left side of the fairway. Stay right for a clean approach to the green. The 6th is a 371 yard par 4 with a severely pitched green where an uphill chip might be preferable to a downhill putt. The 10th is a 505 yard par 5 that plays downhill to another pitched green. The 11th is the longest par 4 on the course at 480 yards and demands a careful approach to avoid the greenside bunkers. |
